Gabby's Story
Today we shine the spotlight on a hidden gem of Stepping Stone House: the SSH Future Pathways Program, and one of its brightest graduates, Gabby.
The Future Pathways Program is designed to spark inspiration in young people. Thinking about the future is hard, and for the young people who come through our doors, it can seem downright impossible. We work with young people to discover their unique hidden talents, and help nourish them into powerful skills.
For Gabby, inspiration was found in the strict discipline of the Muay Thai gym.
Thanks to her natural athleticism, Gabby was top of her class from the moment she enrolled. Although she was clearly ready to receive her first belt, Gabby was only making it to one class per week. Her coach insisted that she first work on her discipline to achieve her belt.
It was this challenge that truly changed Gabby’s life. She vigorously applied herself to Muay Thai, attending every class and finally achieving her first belt on merit – a fantastic accomplishment which we are extremely proud of.
With her determination on show for all to see, Gabby was offered work experience at her Muay Thai gym. This experience propelled her forward into paid work at DHL Express, and Gabby soon moved out into the SSH Independent Living Program. She has now enrolled in a course to gain her security guard licence, the next step in her journey to becoming the Policer Officer she dreams to be.
In Gabby’s words:
“You have helped me get my life back on track. I’ve got a job now, I’m in a better routine, I work out regularly and I have a hobby that I really enjoy. The program has helped me become a better version of myself and I feel good about myself now.”
